Biden's Gun Policy Recommendations Come Today

The vice president has been meeting with parties on both sides of the gun control debate, as well as mental health advocates, as he crafts proposals in response to the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting. And the NRA responds.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is expected to announce sweeping policy changes to gun laws and mental health care on Tuesday, two weeks earlier than expected.

In Pennsylvania, two lawmakers say they want teachers to carry guns.

Biden's recommendations, at the request of President Barack Obama, are a response to the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that claimed the life of 20 first-graders and six educators.

According to a report by the Huffington Post, Biden's proposals are likely to address the availability and access to certain types of guns and ammunition, and tackle the issue of data collection and background checks.

While Connecticut State Police continue their investigation into the Newtown shooting, authorities have identified a 20-year-old man, Adam Lanza, as the shooter. Police said Lanza, who reportedly had some mental health issues and/or social disorder, killed his mother, Nancy, at their Newtown home before shooting his way into the nearby school.

Lanza, who was armed with an assault rifle, among other guns—all legally owned by his mother—ultimately took his own life, police said.

Biden's Remarks, NRA Responds
Biden announced Thursday—a day that saw another school shooting—that he would deliver his proposal on Tuesday, Jan. 15. In his address to the press corps, the Huffington Post quoted him as saying:

"So far [there has been] a surprising recurrence of suggestions that we have universal background checks. Not just closing the gun show loophole, but have total universal background checks including in private sales."

A blog on the vice president's website reports that, in coming up with his proposals, Biden has met and talked with elected officials at all levels of government, wildlife and sporting groups, gun control advocates and gun rights proponents, including the National Rifle Association (NRA).

In response to Thursday's announcement by the vice president, the NRA released a statement that said, in part:

"We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be 'prejudged,' this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners — honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans.

"It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems," the statement continued. "We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of Congress of both parties who are interested in having an honest conversation about what works — and what does not."

And how would Universal Background Checks on Gun Buyers have prevented the Sandy Hook tragedy? Or, any of the other tragedies as far as that is concerned? The guns used in Sandy Brook were legally owned by a person who passed a background check...PLEASE QUIT trying to Instill FEAR into Americans simply in order to push your personal agendas of eradicating Americas Constitution

Joe I am typing this slowly for your benefit as you seem to be a bit special and slow. If there were no guns owned by this last killer or his mom, well there would have been no guns. It's that simple.
As for FEAR...That is what is driving the gun industry. The gun dealers and the NRA are using fear to get rich and they are laughing as they count their millions. The simple minded gun-huggers are the suckers

Are we allowed yet to talk about the Sandy Hook killer's mother is most to blame here? I'm sorry she died too but those guns and ammo should have been secured. Her lack of responsibility let a mentally ill person have unrestricted access.

that's part of the talks of fixing some of the gun laws. one should not have available to their mentally ill child, husband, wife, etc any gun that can be in reach. Unfortunately, the mother is at fault here as well. everyone should get a back ground check and the gun show loop hole should be fixed. other things to address is the mental health issue where healthcare companies want pretty much nothing to do with and a cultural shift. not one person in administration said anything about banning all guns. more tea party talk amongst themselves

Bravo! That is exactly the problem we're trying to solve. If the paranoids on the right could somehow undertstand that no one is trying to take all their guns away or torpedo the constitution and realize this simple mathematical fact we could do something positive for a change. And that simple mathematical fact is that if we can somehow limit the available fire power the next disturbed individual has access to then theoretically we can reduce the number of fatalities in the next incident. I realize that is a bizarre concept to grasp but sadly that is where we are at. Simply put, if the Sandy Hook killer had only enough fire power to kill ten little children in stead of twenty then the parents of the last ten children to die would not have had to pick out coffins for their babies. I know that is a disgusting reality to live with but it's the truth and the NRA and its brain washed followers need to shut the hell up and get out of the way.

Mark and Tony, the problem is there ARE people trying to take guns away, and they're well funded too.

Therefore, the discussion gets dominated by the fringes.

I havent heard of it. please post youtube video links where obama administration is saying they are confiscating ALL guns. Yes, there are citizens saying that as well, just like there are citizens and some business owners, CEOs etc saying they will start killing people if gun laws are passed. complete psychos are on both sides of the issue. Responsible gun legislation is now far fetched. Heck Reagan wanted that as well, Bush Snr. I guess they were communists as well.

I didn't say the Obama Administration, I said there are people who want to take away all guns. The United Nations for one, The Brady Center, Mayors of major cities (Bloomberg and Emmanuel are just a couple), senior Democratic legislators in Washington (Feinstein, Schumer, etc.).

I'm not making a political statement though. It's simply a fact that there are strong parties who have publicly stated they want to ban gun ownership by private individuals, and those in favor of responsible gun ownership can't forget that they are there.

Again that leads to the discussion being dominated by the fringes and that's a shame.

@Mark How's the ban on drugs working out??? How about drunk driving???? Seems criminals don't care about what laws there are they will do what they want when they want. You don't know a damn thing about the constitution specifically the 2nd ammendment. So shut your damn mouth. The constitution was meant to limit government not the citizens. The 2nd ammendment was written to make sure that we the people could defend ourselves from a corrupt givernment. We are suppose to be able to match strength with our government but I wouldn't expect a moron like yourself to understand that.

Tony ask and you shall receive. This is Diane Feinstein, the Senator who proposed both the 1990's "assault weapons" ban and the the currently proposed bill.

Nice Rich, thanks for providing. That was from nearly 20 years ago, and has nothing to do with the obama administration that I asked for.

I did come across that BIG anti-gun Republican "conservative" Reagan's statements on gun control

“I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home.” - Reagan

“Certain forms of ammunition have no legitimate sporting, recreational, or self-defense use and thus should be prohibited.” - Reagan

and Regan's statements are even older, so what is your point with that? Diane Feinstein is still holding office, those comments are still relevant. Regan is not in office, he is not even alive. The legislation Feinstein proposed will not ban AK-47's, they are already for all intents and purposes banned. She is hoping to ban something that looks like an AK-47.

She said it herself, the only reason that she is not proposing to ban all guns is because the votes are not there. So she is doing the next best thing, banning semi-auto guns, especially the ones that look scary. Literally the only thing stopping her is that the votes aren't there. She wants them all, her words, not mine.

from another article on this site....

"An editorial by the Harrisburg Patriot News opines that Corbett won't earn a second term as a result of his controversial moves on issus such as electroral college politcs and mandatory vaginal ultrasounds for any Pennsylvania woman seeking an abortion."

so forcing one's beliefs onto woman's bodies....already passed. just thought it was related. don't forget Paul Ryan's question of forcible rape and magical rape, and whether an abortion would be legal even if a legitimate rape occurred. not my words, but theirs. its sickening.

some of the best anti gun Reagan quotes

"This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety ... While we recognize that assault-weapon legislation will not stop all assault-weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals.” - Reagan

"“Certain forms of ammunition have no legitimate sporting, recreational, or self-defense use and thus should be prohibited.”- Reagan

"“I think maybe there could be some restrictions that there had to be a certain amount of training taken.” - Reagan

“Well, I think there has to be some [gun] control.” - Reagan

where was Fox News reporting these quotes today? Where was the NRA? Reagan sounds like a communist here?

Chris Christie believes in strict gun control...we will see if he has that same view if he runs for President or will he flip flop like Mitt did. Time will tell. In New York the Republican Senate passed the bill that Democrat Cuomo signed into law. Both sides having issues of hypocrisy again. But it always has been this way (see Reagan's anti gun rants above)

yes and most of the guns brought into the city come from surrounding areas not Chicago itself. NY is on the list with some of the least amount.

the states with the most gun ownership....ironically have the most deaths by guns

It is time for Americans to find their spine and pressure Washington to combat gun violence. Gun applicants should pass a test on gun safety and mental health to qualify for a gun permit. They should be required to obtain liabiltiy insurance to be covered for any harm done by their gun. Guns and ammo should have warnings and photographs of the damage they cause.
It appears from Foxnews that gun lovers are a bunch of knee-jerk, simple folk that speak in cliches and incapable of making connections. Gun applicants should also pass an intelligence test to keep guns out of the hands of fools.

We are now on a slippery slope of violence that will just get worse if Washington does not act. Where does America go next after assault weapons? grenades, bombs, nuclear weapons? There is never going to be a lethal weapon that the NRA will not defend. The officers of the NRA are laughing all the way to the bank while Americans are getting killed. Wake up America, stop the right wing knee jerks. March on Washington call you politicians and demand to know how much they recive from the NRA or gun manufacturers.

You all seem to be overlooking the fact that the second amendment has nothing to do with home protection or hunting. It is solely there for us to be able to defend ourselves from a government gone rouge....the same government that does have AK 47 type weapons and better. Lame argument. I do believe that a person who is irresponsible enough to allow another person to get a hold of their firearms should also face penalties. the people who commit crimes should actually be PUNISHED for their crimes as they are in many many other countries and the death penalty should NEVER be off the table for someone who took a life, mentally ill, drunk, high, whatever the excuse.Put em to sleep, that would be the best solution to start cutting down on crime.

Actually, the Second Amendment is in the context of a militia. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states the roles of the militia: "To execute the laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel invasions."

Nothing in there about "government gone rouge". "Suppress insurrections" sounds quite the opposite - suppress citizens gone rogue.

The argument that American's need access to military grade weaponry so they can't rise up against an unjust tyrannical government just comes off as the rantings of unbalanced malcontents, like that unhinged fellow Alex Jones. Should we also have access to PRGs, flame throwers, tanks, land mines and the sort? Where's the line?

A gun is a tool. Why aren't people looking to those who are using the tools? Certainly, a gun is a tool for killing, but it doesn't go off by itself. I think background checks are great and should continue, but it will not stop people from committing atrocities. The Oklahoma city bombing did not involve guns. The planes flown into the WTC and Pentagon did not involve guns. The tourists attacked in NYC last night were beaten were pipes and crow bars. A man in China stabbed about 20 children in a school. People keep saying, "What can we do make sure this [Sandy Hook] never happens again?" You can't! There are precautions you can take, but there are no guarantees. No guarantees in life, but death. There are people in this world who want to hurt others. You can't eliminate evil, but you can combat it. We must always be aware, and alert, to try to keep them from harming ourselves, our loved ones, our friends and neighbors. This is not a safe word, but many people suffer from a false sense of security.

I found this article interesting and relevant. Read it if you like: http://www.wnd.com/2013/01/the-giant-gaping-hole-in-sandy-hook-reporting/

For Rich Cranium,
From your Wiki citation:

Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms. Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons.
