Man Killed in Four-Car Crash on Route 22, Road Closed For Hours Early Friday Morning
A driver going too fast near the active construction site on Route 22 West, near the Route 145 interchange, hit the rear of another car, causing a chain reaction.
Update 8 p.m. Lehigh Valley Live reports the Lehigh County Coroner identified the victim as, William Wilson III, 24, of the 400 block of N. Main Street in the Stewartsville section of Greenwich Township.
There is a video of firefighters at the scene of the accident this morning filmed by NVP - a Freelance Photography based company based in Whitehall.
Update 11:30 a.m. The Lehigh County Coroner's office reports the cause of death is attributed to blunt force trauma and ruled his death an accident. The victim's name will be released upon notification of next of kin.
One person was killed in an early morning, four-car accident on Route 22 west in the construction zone just east of Route 145 in Whitehall Township, according to State Police at Bethlehem.
The Lehigh Valley Coroner's office said the person killed was a man but did not yet release his name.
The accident happened at 2:26 a.m. Police report the first car was driving at an unsafe speed when it hit the rear of a second car that was slowing or stopping in the left lane in the construction zone.
The second car then hit the rear of a third car and at this point the first car then hit the rear of a fourth car.
The second car overturned and a male driver was ejected and later pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the first car was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest along with the passenger in the second car. Both were in critical condition. The driver of the third car was also taken to LVH with minor injures. Police report the driver of the fourth car was not hurt.
All westbound lanes of Route 22 were closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation.
The coroner's office said it will release the man's name sometime later today after an autopsy.
