Parkland High School athletes, following a successful fall filled with undefeated seasons and championships, are preparing for winter sports seasons that begin in December.
The always powerful boys and girls swimming and diving teams will be under the direction of new head coach Robert Robitaille as both teams look to return to the PIAA tournament. The season begins Saturday, Dec. 17 with the much-anticipated tri-meet with perennial powers State College, Hershey and North Penn visiting the Parkland pool.
Parkland's wrestling team, under the direction of Ryan Nunamaker, must overcome the graduation of District 11 160-pound champion Mike Ottinger. However, the program is always competitive in the Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 and should remain so this season. The Trojans make their dual meet debut hosting Whitehall on Monday, Dec. 12.
Parkland's boys basketball team, guided by Andy Stephens, just failed to make the District 11 tournament last year but will look to experienced returning players after rallying from a 2-6 start to finish the season 10-12. The Trojans will rely on that experience to get through their Lehigh Valley Conference schedule and hopefully qualify for the D-11 tournament. The Trojans will begin the season Friday, Dec. 9 against Stroudsburg.
Parkland girls basketball coach Wes Spence is hoping to build on the success of last season, despite a few graduated seniors. The Lady Trojans qualified for the Lehigh Valley Conference tournament and the received a high seed for the District 11 tourney last season. Spence is likely hopeful that his returnees can carry the club just as far this season. They begin play on Friday Dec. 9 at Saucon Valley High School.
