South Whitehall Police Investigate Dry Ice Price-Gouging Claim at Ice Cream World

According to the South Whitehall Police Blotter a customer claims Ice Cream World quoted one price over the phone and charged a higher price at the store.

South Whitehall Police referred an Ice Cream World customer to the U.S. Department of Agriculture after they complained on Oct. 31, that an employee of the store quoted a dry ice price of $1.50 per pound on the phone but charged $3 per pound at the store.

After Hurricane Sandy blew through the Lehigh Valley and knocked out power for thousands, Ice Cream World experienced a huge demand for dry ice. There were lines of people that extended out the front door on Tuesday, Oct. 30. as people waited up to two hours for dry ice.

Dry ice can be used in freezers and refrigerators to keep them cool without power.

I could have seen that coming. I hope they get shut down or get a huge fine. The lines into the place were all the way onto Hamilton Blvd. It is a total shame that they made people pay twice as much when they arrived. This is no time to rip your fellow citizens off. Shame on you!!! Most of the people there were senior citizens.

Excellent comment Bill. I never shop at this store...did you ever hear of charging extra for whipped cream on an ice cream sunday? That turned me away during summer. Yea Longacres Dairy down in Bally.

I too was in that long long line, there were senior citizens and mothers with young babies and children that had to wait in the long lines. It was freezing cold with rain and no sun. I heard there was only one person working inside. Someone also said they normally charged $1.50 for dry ice but when Halloween comes around the price goes up to $3.00. Terrible! I finally left after 1 hour, I was too cold, my joints hurt horribly and my back could not take the standing or cold. Shame on them for taking advantage of people when they are at their lowest.
