It's not that it's a good or bad idea, it's just a lame idea. I support responsible gun ownership (we have a firearm in our household), but zealotry turns me off. Having a discussion about trying to reduce gun violence, and keep firearms out of the hands of irresponsible people, shouldn't freak responsible gun owners out. It's something they should support.

That image "hammers and clubs kill more people than guns" is factually inaccurate. 496 people where murdered with hammers and clubs combined. 323 people were murdered with a RIFLE. Once you add any other type of gun, the number goes up. It's not a fair comparison at all.

gun appreciation day should be changed to gun responsiblity day. If the mother in Newtown had locked up or kept her guns at a club many families would not be struggling with the realization that their child is gone forever. Maybe the father would have advised the mother it is not a good idea to be armed to the excess with a mentally unstable son in the house that she herself had warned people not to turn their back on him.

Noone's coming to take your guns. Period. What is being discussed are reasonable restrictions to the ownership of guns, particularly those that can kill dozens of people in a very short period of time. Restrictions on the sale of assault style weapons, restrictions on the sale of large capacity clips or magazines, expansion of background checks, online and gun show loopholes. And I agree that we should have a Gun Safety Day, a School Safety Day, a Mental Health Awareness Day. The further glorification of guns is not the answer.

Martha, your statement is just untrue, and is moderately insulting to firearm enthusiasts. People buy, trade, own, and use firearms for a variety of reasons, and none of those reasons include a 'wild west mentality'. The vast majority (well over 99%) of all gun owners are responsible, law-abiding citizens. Most use them for hunting, sport, and protection. Very few gun owners (and almost none of the legal ones, because there are certainly people who possess firearms illegally) have anything even remotely close to this supposed mentality you seem to be sure exist.

Some people were scared that when the Castle Doctrine expansion was passed in PA in August of 2011, that it would reate a 'wild west' on our streets, with a huge increase in shootings, and the wounding of illegal bystanders. As it stands now, those fears have been totally disproven. I'd like to know what 'facts/statistics' you've been looking at, as they seem to have seriously mislead you. If I can help you to gain an actual knowledge of this situation, or introduce you to the joy of firearms in anyway, please let me know. Gun appreciation day? What a joke! Why not have stove appreciation day, fridge appreciation day, etc. These are things we all use every day. A freaking gun appreciation day is so out of line.
