Take time out to thank a veteran today.

Chances are you know a veteran. There are more than 21.8 million of them in the United States, according to the 2010 Census.

Each year, on Nov. 11, the country honors their service … please add your pictures, comments, stories and memories about your service, or about the veterans in your life.

About Veterans Day

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars.

In August, Patch told you about a B-29 pilot who flew bombing runs over Japan during World War II.  A parachute that saved his life became his wife's wedding dress.

Thank you to my father, Robert E. Fenstermaker, for his contributions to the Great War, including fighting at the Battle of the Bulge; and to David Venditta for bringing so many local veterans' stories to light.

Thank you to all who serve and who have served, including my dad Sam. Growing up, we loved his stories at the dinner table, including how he had to "sleep with one eye open."
