Viewfinder: Hot Hurling Competition at Haines Mill Park

Allentown Hibernians Hurling Club hosted four East Coast teams in a day of gaelic games in South Whitehall.

Defying the heat and humidity, the Allentown Hibernians Hurling Club hosted a hurling competition with the Hoboken Guards, Baltimore Bohemians, Washington D.C. Gaels and Pittsburgh Hurling on Saturday, July 23, at Haines Mill field in Cetronia.

is an Irish sport billed as "the fastest game on grass." Players use a use a hurley (stick) and a sliotar (ball). Players score by hitting the ball over the crossbar on the opponents' goal for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by the goalkeeper for three points.

Allentown Hibernians were the overall winners, going 3-0, said club co-founder Patrick O'Donnell. He said Hoboken came in second, winning two out of the three; Baltimore went 1-2; and Washington, D.C. went 0-3. Pittsburg didn't have enough players to field a team so the players split up among the other teams, O'Donnell said.
