43 Chefs to Compete in Asbury Chili Cook-Off

You can help pick the winners in Asbury United Methodist Church's 5th Annual Chili Cookoff on Saturday by voting for your favorites.

Thirty-four amateurs, three fire companies and six professional chefs will compete for top bragging rights Saturday when the Asbury United Methodist Church hosts its fifth annual Chili-Cookoff.

And you can help pick the winner by tasting the chilis—sample size is 1.5 ounces—and voting for your favorites.

It's all for a good cause. Proceeds from the cookoff will benefit the Lehigh County Conference of Churches.

The cookoff will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Asbury at 1533 Springhouse Road in South Whitehall.

The voting procedure has changed for this year, said Dick McCreight, an organizer of the event. Instead of the one-cent votes in a can:

  • A freewill donation will be taken at the door—as a guideline ask how much you spend when you take your family out to dinner—and each family member will get 10 tickets for voting for their favorite chilis.
  • Additional tickets will be available for sale for more voting.

There also will be tables for the three Lehigh County Conference of Churches agencies (soup kitchen, Daybreak and Aspires Mentoring program), where people can make donations to the programs.

To win the "I Climbed Chili Mountain" challenge, a guest must taste all 43 chilis, McCreight said. (Count it, that's 64.5 ounces of chili!)

A new competitor this year is "Teen Healthy Chef"—student chefs who are participating in the Aspires Mentoring program offered by the Conference of Churches. Teen Healthy Chef is an after-school program run at Dieruff and Allen high schools where students learn how to cook healthy meals.
