Bites Nearby: Applebee's

A relaxed spot for family and friends to grab a bite

Decisions, decisions. A trip to involves choices galore, and that might be even before seeing the menu.

There are half a dozen Applebee’s locations in the Lehigh Valley, including in South Whitehall; more than 2,000 altogether. The business describes itself as the largest casual-dining chain in the world.

Then there’s the menu -- multiple pages with lots of color photos. As with many restaurants, there are common categories organized by course, preparation or ingredient: appetizers, salads, steak, ribs, chicken, seafood, pasta, burgers, desserts, drinks.... On top of that, diners are presented with various “deals” and combo options to make studying the menu more tempting.

For lunch (Mon.-Fri. until 4 p.m.), diners can create a Pick ‘n Pair with any two items from among several soups, salads, sandwiches and pasta. For example, tomato basil soup and oriental chicken salad. The current 2-for-$20 special encourages thrifty couples to choose one appetizer to share (maybe spinach and artichoke dip or boneless breaded chicken wings) and two full-size entrees from among a specific selection.

Some featured entrees, like Bourbon Street chicken and shrimp, are served on sizzling skillets. For the health- and weight-conscious, Applebee’s has a number of entrees certified as under 550 calories (including steak, chicken and shrimp—not just lettuce), as well as full entrees endorsed by Weight Watchers.

Besides soft drinks, beer and wine, the beverage menu features all manner of fruity cocktails and margaritas.

In addition to dining in, Applebee’s offers Carside to Go, its version of take-out. Call in the order in advance, then drive to one of the dedicated parking places. A Carside to Go server will bring the order right to the car.
