Bites Nearby: Savory Grille

This restaurant is off the beaten path, but its fare makes it a destination.

Classically-trained chefs and co-owners Shawn and Dorothy Doyle have taken a vintage country inn (Seisholtzville Hotel—about 10 minutes’ drive southwest of Macungie), and transformed it into a rustic home for their family and a fine-dining restaurant that consistently receives critical acclaim.

The menu of the is constantly changing to incorporate fresh local foods based on their seasonal availability. Everything is made from scratch. Even the herbs and edible flowers are harvested straight from the gardens on the premises.

As of early April, entrée selections include panned sea scallops with whole grain couscous, Greek olives and sundried tomato crème; prime pork Delmonico with yam and exotic mushroom crepe and roasted garlic sauce; and cumin dusted duck breast with roasted fingerling potatoes and chipotle blood orange.

The dining room is small, and the restaurant’s reputation is prodigious, so reservations are a must. A bright spot to the issue of limited space is the covered patio, which adds extra seating and offers the opportunity for open-air dining in fair weather.

Diners should expect to devote sufficient time to a leisurely meal. The Savory Grille is decidedly not a place to grab a quick, casual bite, but is a destination for a memorable dining experience for patrons who prefer sophisticated cuisine.
