Bites Nearby: The Buckeye Tavern

The Buckeye Tavern is true to its roots.

Editor's Note: You could stand on a corner and look around until a sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, South Whitehall Patch will pick a great place either in the township or nearby that is worth checking out.

Here's this week's choice:

Situated on Brookside Road in Macungie, the Buckeye Tavern is a venerable local landmark. The structure was built as an inn in 1735. Since 1768, a series of proprietors has been serving food, drink and hospitality to neighbors and travelers. Present-day patrons are still fond of the friendly welcome, wide selection of robust tavern food, and cozy feel of the place, which is enhanced by the original stone walls and touches of historic décor.

The Buckeye is family-friendly, with right-sized and right-priced menu items to appeal to kids as well. Lunch and dinner are available seven days a week, and there’s a hearty breakfast menu for Saturday and Sunday mornings. Nightly specials offer a change of pace, such as Pennsylvania Dutch night on Mondays and Mexican nights on Wednesdays.

A tavern wouldn’t be a tavern without libations, and there is much from which to choose, including more than 50 beers on tap and in bottles. Happy Hour is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday.

On the menu you’ll find Buffalo wings, sliders, potato skins, burgers and sandwiches, award-winning black diamond steak, and lots more American favorites from land and sea. The Buckeye Tavern is an unpretentious local roadhouse that is true to its roots.
