Parkview Avenue To Get Street Lighting

Plan moves ahead as residents reach consensus.

Residents who live on Parkview Avenue will soon see the lights.

South Whitehall commissioners recently approved the installation of four street lights there, after neighbors had petitioned the township for the lights as a way to deter crime in the neighborhood.

Community Development Director Jeffrey Higgins said residents had reached a consensus on both the installation and the location of the new light poles.

Higgins did not know when PPL Corp. would be installing the lights.

The effort began earlier this year when Neal and Rebecca Ream, who have lived on Parkview Avenue for seven years, approached township commissioners about the need for lighting in their neighborhood, off Chew Street, to deter crime. They initially asked for a light in the alley behind their home, but after a discussion with the commissioners, township officials decided to explore full lighting along the avenue.

According to information previously provided, the township would have to pay $2,000 toward installation and about $20 a month per light in electricity costs.
