Something's Fishy At Covered Bridge Park

Grab your tackle box and head to the creek – it's time for trout fishing in Lehigh County and 17 other counties in Pennsylvania. Other counties will have to wait until April 16.

Today is opening day for trout fishing in Lehigh County, and at Covered Bridge Park in South Whitehall, people lined Jordan Creek in their waders and casted lines.

The air was crisp as people of all ages spent the morning at the park. Lone fishermen stood knee deep in the creek, and families too were along the shore. The one thing they had in common was a love of fishing.

The Schlosser family was enjoying the day, especially Shania who learned through a Facebook post that her brother Anthony and Dad were out fishing. “Come get me,” she said. Barry Schlosser laughed as he mentioned his daughter’s eagerness to join him and her brother on opening day. She didn't get out last year but was making up for it this year with a successful morning.

By 10 a.m., both Bob Mauser Jr. and his Uncle Donald had caught the maximum number of fish allowed for a day. “It’s an excellent day,” said Mauser while waiting for his Dad to catch his final fish, “and this is a good, clean spot.”

He was looking forward to enjoying his catches on the grill this evening.

Trout must be at least seven inches in length in order to keep them, and anyone 16 and older requires a license.

In addition to a fishing license, trout anglers 16 and older must possess a Trout/Salmon Stamp (or Combination Trout-Salmon Stamp/Lake Erie Permit) to fish for trout. The cost for those 16 through 64 is $22.70 plus an additional $9.70 for the trout/salmon stamp.

The season lasts until Labor Day.

If you plan to take the family out, another great spot to take the kids is located in the Trexler Game Preserve. That area is also part of the Jordan Creek and is a children’s only fishing area.
