What Kind of Park Do You Want At Wedgewood?

Parks and Recreation officials want to hear from the neighborhood tonight.

South Whitehall residents in the Wedgewood Park area had e a chance to view and comment on proposed improvements to the subdivision’s park during a public meeting at 7 on Jan. 10 in the township building at 4444 Walbert Ave.

Residents approached the Parks and Recreation Board in January 2008. The following month, the board held a public meeting to hear what the neighborhood would like to see at the site, situated between 40th and 41st streets to the east and west, respectively, and Evergreen Road to the south.

Parks and Recreation budgeted for a master site plan in 2010.

The goal of the meeting was to solicit comments for completing the plan.  Cost of the improvements will be borne by the township; no grant money is involved in the project, according to Parks and Recreation Superintendent Robert Ibach.

Three plans have been proposed.  The simplest features a park rules sign, benches, a doggie waste disposal station, and plantings, including trees lining the alley leading from Chew Street.

A second plan includes a meadow and native plant area; walking path; entrance path from North 40th Street; formal entrance circles and formal entrance structure at the alley entrance onto Chew Street, and an improved alley from Chew Street to North 40th Street.

The third and most comprehensive plan includes either a parking lot or handicapped-only parking lot; a walking path with either crushed stone or macadam; mulched planting beds; an entrance path from North 41st Street; formal entrance circles; an alley paved all the way to North 40th Street, and an area of a low-maintenance meadow grass and native plantings.

The township is hoping to do plantings in late summer or early fall, according to Greg Adams, assistant planner in the Community Development Department. The timeline depends on the complexity of the plan and how much funding is needed to complete the project.

All three plans are available for viewing here. Included is a survey on the project. Completed surveys, accepted until Feb. 1, can be mailed to South Whitehall Township, Attn: Recreation Department, 4444 Walbert Ave., Allentown, PA 18104.
