Why I Love South Whitehall

Brian Hite, in his first post on South Whitehall Patch, counts the ways South Whitehall is the best place to live in the Lehigh Valley.

I plan on using this space to blog on a variety of topics and human interest stories. Since I was born and raised in South Whitehall, I figured I would start by writing about why I believe South Whitehall has it all and pointing out how special of an area we all live in. This is also a bit of an introduction to anyone looking to move into South Whitehall.

The township is at the crossroads of eastern Pennsylvania, with Route 22, Route 309, Interstate 78 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike all located partially in the township, allowing excellent avenues to travel and commute daily -- not many communities can compare with that.

, the crown jewel of amusement parks, is our most famous commodity. Dorney is embarking on its 128th year of operation and is a summer and fall destination often overlooked or under appreciated by locals, but it the single most valuable entity in the township.

The South Whitehall police, and allow us to live a safe and secure daily existence.  The police department has excellent community outreach with two crime watch groups. Healthcare is well represented with , Integrated Health Campus, and many other physicians located here.

To keep in shape you can spend time at 24/7 West End Fitness Club, and or a handful of swim clubs. You need not join a club to enjoy and experience the beauty of and Wehr’s dam. We are fortunate to have an excellent park system throughout the township with athletic fields, walking trails and recreational opportunities.

, the best school district in the Lehigh Valley, has all its secondary schools located in the township. Always at the forefront of education, I am proud to be a graduate of Parkland.

The is currently located here and is a valuable source of information. The library often has authors in for book signings and other various events on a monthly basis.

Commerce and shopping is varied from the small local shops such as to the large corporate stores such as and . South Whitehall is fortunate to have several large food stores as well as an abundance of restaurants from fast food to elegant dining. Auto dealers such as – Allentown Mini have moved into the township and others such as Rothrock have long established roots.  Entertainment is a movie theater away at the as well as the aforementioned Dorney Park.

The multitude of places of worship can accommodate just about every religious denomination. Some of the most can be found at our churches.

In theory you really never have to leave South Whitehall to get what you need for a satisfying and healthy life for you and your family. This is why I plan on being a lifelong resident, and I am proud to say I was born, raised and live in South Whitehall Township.
