Westfield Hospital Closing Tuesday

Lehigh Valley Health Network taking over hospital and converting it to a center for orthopedic medicine.

Westfield Hospital will close its doors and stop providing emergency medical services and other patient care at midnight Tuesday, according to a public notice that was posted as a blog on Patch.

The Lehigh Valley Health Network has purchased the facility at 4815 Tilghman St., South Whitehall Township, and plans to make it a center for orthopedic surgery and care, beginning early next year.

LVHN and Westfield Hospital made a joint announcement on the transaction in October.

The notice posted by Diane Roberts, Westfield’s director of marketing and public relations, said:

“Patients wanting a copy of their medical records should contact Westfield Hospital by telephone at (610) 973-8400 during the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Information as to how to obtain a copy of the medical records is also available on Westfield Hospital’s website, which is www.WestfieldHospital.com.”

Brian Downs, the director of media relations for LVHN, said in an email that he could say nothing more about what is happening at Westfield beyond the October announcement.

The new center will offer a range of orthopedic care, with a focus on total joint replacement and spine surgery.

Also as part of the transaction, Lehigh Valley Hospital Network will run the Westfield Surgery Center for ambulatory surgery. It has three operating rooms and two procedure rooms.

Preliminarily, LVHN has plans to turn Westfield’s emergency department into an urgent care facility.

Westfield Hospital, which has 25 licensed beds, currently employs about 100 people. Its employees will be given an opportunity to seek jobs at the new Center for Orthopedic Medicine or at other LVHN campuses, the October news release said. The new facility is expected to employ about 100 people.

Dr. Yasin Khan, the CEO of Westfield Hospital, and Dr. Elizabeth Khan will continue their private, independent practices—Comprehensive Pain Centers and Tilghman Medical Center—in a medical office building on the site, the release said.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

“Westfield Hospital wishes to thank its patients and members of the community for their support over the years and for giving Westfield Hospital the opportunity to provide compassionate care to its patients,” the Westfield blog post said.
