Alleged Embezzlers' Hearings Delayed

William and Nancy Tonkin are accused of stealing more than $850,000 from South Whitehall Township's water, sewer and refuse fund.

Preliminary hearings have been delayed for William and Nancy Tonkin, the former South Whitehall employees

Retired South Whitehall Utility Supervisor Nancy Tonkin, 66, was scheduled to have her preliminary hearing Wednesday afternoon in Lehigh County Court. A new date has not been scheduled, according to a court official.

Tonkin and her husband, William, 69, who are from Emmaus, were arrested and charged on several felony counts The couple allegedly used some of the money to gamble at casinos and live beyond their means, according to Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin.

Nancy Tonkin was sent to Lehigh County Prison in lieu of $200,000 bail. She is no longer represented by attorney Eleanor Breslin.

William Tonkin, a retired South Whitehall police officer, was arrested and charged after he turned himself on May 22. He has been out on $100,000 bail since Friday, according to court records.
