Boy Hit by Car and Killed While Trick or Treating is Identified

Jordan Steinmetz, 14, was struck on Schantz Road in Upper Macungie Friday night and killed. Berks-Lehigh Regional Police are investigating.

A 14-year-old boy who had been apparently trick-or-treating was hit and killed by a vehicle Friday evening on Schantz Road in Upper Macungie.

Jordan Steinmetz, of Lisa Court, Upper Macungie, was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, according to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office.

Berks-Lehigh Regional Police said the boy was in costume, walking west on Schantz Road with another boy, when he was struck by a SUV also travelling west on Schantz Road, according to a preliminary investigation.

The accident happened at 8:20 p.m. in the area of Balsam Street and Cottonwood Road. The coroner's office said the accident happened in front of 6429 Schantz Road.

The driver of the SUV has not been identified.

The boy was presumed to have been trick-or-treating. He was taken from the scene by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest where he later died.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said the boy died from multiple blunt force injuries. He ruled the manner of death as accident.

The boy's grandfather, Albert Albino, told the Express-Times that Steinmetz liked to play video games and that he was considered fun-loving by family and friends. Steinmetz was about a 10-minute walk away from home when he was struck, the report said.

Upper Macungie had moved Trick or Treat night to Oct. 31 then moved it back to Oct. 26 following parents' complaints. Children were trick or treating from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.

This is the second pedestrian fatality in Lehigh County in recent months. A Dorney Park worker was hit and killed near Interstate 78 in September.

The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department is continuing their investigation into Friday's fatality. Anyone who witnessed this accident is asked to contact headquarters at 610-683-8740.

I do hope that narrow thinking people like Sara are in the minority. Seems like the majority of us offer our thoughts and prayers to the child's family.

My sincere sympathy to the family at this time. What a devastating trial to be going through.
(I hope they never read the comment from Sarah)

God Bless this child and his family. And god bless the driver who hit this child, they will never be the same, either. I personally wish drivers would be extra cautious with their driving, especially knowing it is trick or treat night. I live in South Whitehall and the last few years we see so many speeding cars. I am talking 40 to 50mph on roads like Helen, and Columbia, and like 60 on Whitehall Ave in certain spots, just for example. We need to get people to slow down !! I see it everyday, people are on a mission to get from point A to point B. They do not take into account that there are children playing and people walking their dogs etc. So many impatient drivers, who don't even have respect in their own neighborrhoods. Please SLOW down, before something bad happens. Thank you

There is absolutely no excuse for this terrible tragedy. There is a stop sign in this location. What was this driver doing?!! I walked right past this spot a couple minutes before this happened. I have been crying all day for this poor child and I didn't even know him. I am so sorry for him, his family and friends.

jordan was too young for this, jordan is my little cousin, i lived with him and for people to be fighting or saying their dumb comments is disrespectful for me and my family. think about my uncle, aunt (his parents) even my grandma and my mother and the rest of my family how hard it is to wake up knowing that this is not a nightmare its real. Leave love and prayers not politics or stupid comments. thanks.

Word has it that the man who hit and killed Jordan is home on leave from the military, is this the reason as to why he has not been named yet? Are they trying to protect him after he killed a boy who just turned 14 yrs old because he (the driver) was possibly using his cell phone in one manner or the other? He is serving our Country but he is still to be held accountable for his actions regardless. If he is man enough to serve our County, then the police should be "man enough" to announce his name!!!!!! Seriously, who is the victim here Berks Lehigh Regional?

I contacted LVHN several months ago about volunteering with my son (8 years old) at the AndersonRead More campus. I would stay with him at all times and supervise him. I was told that they do not accept children. I think its a shame that the hospital will not accept him a a volunteer. I am trying to teach him how to give back to his community . Apparently the hospital does not want our help. I think several patients, especially older ones, would like getting assistance from a young child.
Karla Bachl May 7, 2013 at 03:14 pm
Tom, LVHN does not have an Anderson Campus. I believe you are referring to St Luke's Health Network.Read More LVHN is not able to accept volunteers under the age of 16 years old. There are many mandated reasons that young children are not allowed to volunteer in a hospital setting. Volunteering is a wonderful thing to teach your children. There are organizations in the Leigh Valley who are willing to utilize families. Please visit the Volunteer Center of the Leigh Valley for other opportunities in your area. www.volunteerlv.org
