High Winds Causing Power Outages in Valley

PPL reports more than 4,800 customers without power in Lehigh and Northampton counties; severe thunderstorm watch in effect.

A wind advisory for gusts up to 45 mph is in effect for the Lehigh Valley until 2 p.m. Friday, with the high winds resulting in area power outages this morning.

PPL's website is reporting 4,045 Lehigh County customers without power as of 9 a.m., with 835 in Northampton County without power.

Met-Ed reports minor outages in Northampton County, with up to 100 customers without power in the area near the Lehigh-Berks line along Interstate 78.

Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

And don't be fooled if you are thinking that at least the winds are bringing in warmer air. Much cooler air is marching right behind, with a chance of snow flurries Sunday morning.

The weather service says showers will continue Friday morning, with a slight chance of rain in the afternoon. Temperatures will reach the lower 70s.

But Friday morning's story is more about the wind. It's coming from the southwest at 20-30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph.

Temperatures will dip a bit in the evening, with lows in the low to mid 40s. But the wind will die down, coming from the west at 5 to 10 mph.

Relatively warm temperatures are forecast to continue Saturday, with highs in the lower 60s. The weather service is calling for a chance of sprinkles in the afternoon.

Cooler temperatures will take over Saturday night, with lows in the upper 30s and northwest winds 10-15mph.

Then here comes that chance of flurries Sunday morning with the return to standard time. Temperatures will only reach the upper 40s and are forecast to drop to the upper 20s Sunday night.

It is expected to be sunny Monday, with highs again in the upper 40s.
