South Whitehall Police to Hire New Officer

South Whitehall Township Police Chief Thomas Toth said the candidate is one of three officers who made the final list of candidates.

South Whitehall Township Police Chief Thomas Toth will make an offer to one of three final candidates for a new entry level patrol officer position.

A list of 16 candidates was winnowed down to three, the number required by civil service rules, Toth said. The list is valid for up to two years, and the department may draw from it if it hires an additional officer, he said.

On Wednesday, the Board of Commissioners authorized Toth to make a conditional offer of employment, which requires the candidate to complete additional tests.

The department, which currently has 37 members, added four new patrol officers in 2012 to replace four who retired. Starting salary for a new officer at the time was $53,026.

The new patrol officer would be an addition to the force, which would allow a current member to become a school resource officer in the Parkland middle schools.

Toth said in May he hoped to select a new patrol officer by mid-July and have the school resource officer in place before the start of the new school year.
