Pennsylvania Turnpike to be All Electronic Tolls

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission officials say they will convert the Pennsylvania Turnpike into overhead, electronic tolls.

According to an article in the Patriot News the "turnpike's acting chief executive officer Craig Shuey told a joint House and Senate Transportation Committee hearing that the five-year project is the most ambitious of its kind in the nation.

The Patriot-News reports that the turnpike employs 755 unionized toll collectors, who -- along with approximately 100 nonunion employees associated with running the toll plazas -- would be out of a job if the system converted to electronic collection.

The cost to man those toll plazas runs more than $67 million a year and is projected to rise to $77 million by 2014.
