S. Whitehall Explores Regional Leaf Composting

South Whitehall is applying for a DEP recycling grant with Hellertown, Lower Macungie and Bethlehem townships.

South Whitehall Township is working with Upper Macungie Township to handle its leaf composting, an official said.

Residents have complained to officials about South Whitehall's lack of a mulching facility since the closest one in Schnecksville closed several years ago.

"We said we were going to look at all alternatives and options and it worked. It's positive and we're thrilled," President Commissioner Tori Morgan said at the Board of Commissioners' recent meeting.

Township Manager Jon Hammer said the township does not have an agreement in place yet with Upper Macungie, but is exploring it.

The township hopes to get a $10,000 grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection by applying for a recycling grant with Hellertown and Lower Macungie and Bethlehem townships.

"It's a good regional type of initiative," Township Manager Jon Hammer said.
