South Whitehall Early Retirements to Save $334K First Year

Five South Whitehall Township employees' early retirements are expected to help reduce the township's long-term pension and healthcare costs.

South Whitehall Township expects to save about $334,000 in the first year that five employees' early retirements go into effect, according to Township Manager Jon Hammer.

The township offered early retirement to 16 employees in July and five accepted. Four of the employees work in the Public Works Department and one is a clerical worker, Hammer said.

The packages were offered to help reduce the township's long-term pension and healthcare costs.

It is the second offer of early retirement packages the township has made in more than a year. In April 2012, 17 employees in the finance, public works and economic development departments were offered early retirement. The township expected to save about $410,000 from those retirements.
