South Whitehall Patch Election Results 2012

People working the polls said turnout was unprecedented in South Whitehall Township.

Voters at South Whitehall polls throughout the township experienced long lines for Tuesday's election - as long as an 1.5 hours at Orefield Middle School - but for the most part spirits seemed high.

John Mondschein was last in line to vote at 8 p.m. at Parkway Manor Elementary School but it wasn't because he waited to the last minute.

"I made three passes by here today - this is my fourth time here," Mondschein said.

In fact, many of the voters in line at the end of the night had tried to vote earlier but decided to wait and come back later when the line was shorter.

South Whitehall voters favored the presidential winners in the 2004 and 2008 elections.

President George W. Bush beat challenger Sen. John Kerry in 2004 but only by 133 votes, 5,027 to 4,894. The candidates split the township’s eight voting precincts.

Then-Sen. Barack Obama did even better in 2008, winning all eight precincts and beating Sen. John McCain by almost 900 votes, 5,590 to 4,701.
