Parkland Hires New Teachers, Others

The Parkland School Board approved several hires at its June 19th meeting.

Editor's note: This article is updated to better describe new hires. Teachers previously listed as "temporary" are those who do not yet have tenure in Pennsylvania. To be tenured and "permanent," a teacher must work in a district in the state at least three consecutive years, district spokeswoman Nicole McGalla said.

The Parkland School Board approved the hiring of new teachers and other staff throughout the district at its June 19th meeting.

District officials have said that some hirings would be necessary for the 2012-2013 school year, even with the district , because of the at the end of the school year.

The new hires are as follows:

* Michael J. Frew, of Bethlehem, as a third grade teacher at Kernsville Elementary School. He will earn $59,094 annually. He replaces Peggy Coker, who retired.

* Alexandra K. Geiger, of Schnecksville, as a fifth grade teacher at , at an annual salary of $48,671. She will replace , who moved to another assignment.

* Emily J. Toth, of Schnecksville, as a fifth grade teacher at Kernsville Elementary School, at an annual salary of $48,671. She will replace Kenneth Koch, who retired.

* Ryan Kleintop, of Slatington, as a health and physical education teacher at Kratzer Elementary School, at an annual salary of $55,980. Kleintop will replace Ed Rabenold, who retired.

* Julie M. Lapp, of Emmaus, as a kindergarten teacher at and , at an annual salary of $48,871. She will replace Jessie Castro, who moved to another assignment, and Erin Toselli, who resigned.

* Nicole A. Miller, of Orefield, as a third grade teacher at Fogelsville Elementary School, at an annual salary of $48,771. She will replace Jean Zellner, who retired.

* Michele R. Geczi, of Breinigsville, as a first grade teacher at Schnecksville Elementary School, at an annual salary of $58,316. Geczi replaces Kay Piston, who moved to another assignment.

* David A. Whitby, of Wescosville, as a third grade teacher at Fred J. Jaindl Elementary School, at an annual salary of $49,071. He will replace Justina Black, who moved to another assignment.

* Hailey R. Brown, of Nazareth, as an art teacher at Schnecksville Elementary School, at an annual salary of $48,671. Brown will replace , who retired.

* Jennifer L. May, of Camp Hill, as a third grade teacher at Kernsville Elementary School, at an annual salary of $59,094. She replaces Christine Hankee, who retired.

* Kristi Szabo, of Quakertown, as a German teacher at , at an annual salary of $49,071. She will replace Diane Cortazzo, who retired, and as a temporary substitute for Tracy Wanyo, who will be on a sabbatical.

Amy D. Munson, of Emmaus, as a chemistry teacher at Parkland High School, at an annual salary of $55,980. Munson is a substitute for Wendy Simpson, who will be on a sabbatical.

* Meaghan C. Buck, of Northampton, as a second grade teacher at Cetronia Elementary School, at an annual salary of $48,871. Buck is a substitute for Tara Grather, who is on a child leave.

* Andrew R. Walker, of Macungie, as learning support teacher at Parkland High School, at an annual salary of $48,671. Walker is a substitute for replace Ann Arnold, who is on child leave.

* Melissa M. Cerco, of Schnecksville, as a learning support teacher at Parkland High School, at an annual salary of $57,537. Cerco is a substitute for Jennifer Iobst, who is on child leave.

* Eric D. Focht, of Lansdale, as a chemistry teacher at Parkland High School, at an annual salary of $48,771, pro-rated, effective Oct. 1. He is a substitute for Maria Gougoustamos, who will be on a child leave of absence.

* Jason M. Hamilton, of Breinigsville, as a second grade teacher at Cetronia Elementary School, at an annual salary of $48,871. He is a substitute for Kelly Torbert, who will be on child leave.

* Tara Marsh, of Northampton, as a learning support teacher at Parkland High School, at an annual salary of $55,980. She is a substitute for Laura Walizer, who is on child leave.

* Monique Johnson-Gambino, of Whitehall, PA, as a third grade teacher at Fred J. Jaindl Elementary School, at an annual salary of $55,980. She is a substitute for Stephanie Gagnier, who is on child leave.

* Julia C. Schultz, of Allentown, as a fourth grade teacher at , at an annual salary of $55,980. She is a substitute for Cailin Bodnar, who will be on child leave.

* Karyn E. Haines, of Schnecksville, as a fourth grade teacher at l, at an annual salary of $55,980, pro-rated. She is a substitute for Janiel Spisak, who will be on child leave.

* Mandy L. Sommer, of Northampton, as a fourth grade teacher at Cetronia Elementary School, at an annual salary of $48,671.  Sommer is a substitute for Michelle Barbieri, who is on childrearing leave.

* Madeline A. Smith, of Bethlehem, as a second grade teacher at Parkway Manor Elementary School, at an annual salary of $48,671. She is a substitute for Meghan Thomas, who is on childrearing leave.

* David J. Haaf, as a summer school mathematics instructor, at a contracted rate.

* Brenda J. Deily, of Danielsville, as a substitute bus driver, at a daily rate of $78.68.

The board also approved the hiring of following summer personnel:

* Michael Lavendar, of Allentown, first-year employee.

* Deborah Pontone, of Breinigsville, first-year employee.
