Parkland Losing Longtime Teachers

Teachers Gary Arbogast and Monica Berger each had more than 30 years of service.

A pair of Parkland School District teachers with a combined 65 years in education will retire next year.

The school board on Tuesday night approved the retirement of Kernsville Elementary fifth grade teacher Monica Berger, who has 31 years of service, and will step down at the end of the school year.

Also retiring is Gary Arbogast, a Parkland High school social studies teacher with 34 years in education. His retirement goes into effect Jan. 24.

Another longtime employee, bus driver Betty Lou Hausman, will also retire at the end of the school year. Her career goes back 37 years.

The board approved a number of other personnel changes:

  • Mark Lapos, director of school services, resigning as of Oct. 25
  • Carole Cary, library paraprofessional at Springhouse Middle School, retiring after 21 years, effective Oct. 25.

  • Linda LaDue, art club advisor at the high school, resigned as of Sept. 25.

The board also approved the move from part-time to full-time status for three employees: Springhouse ESL teacher Joan Lunge, vehicle driver Georgeann Kressley and high school custodian Melissa Bachert.

Two teachers will take child-rearing leaves of absence for the rest of the school year: Schnesckville third grade teacher Natalie Leibensperger and Springhouse sixth grade teacher Linday Tallarida.

And finally, the board approved the hiring of four employees:

  • Robin Hersh, a third grade teacher at Schnecksville, serving as a substitute for Leibensperger.
