Cub Scouts Create Sea of Flags Along Tilghman Street

Pack 12 from Asbury United Methodist Church honors veterans for Memorial Day.

Those 700 flags waving in the wind along Tilghman Street in South Whitehall pay tribute to veterans this Memorial Day weekend.

"Flags on Tilghman" is the handiwork of Cub Scout Pack 12, based at in South Whitehall.

Laura Lyle, committee chair for Pack 12, said about 30 cub scouts and their siblings were involved in placing the flags Thursday night along a stretch of Tilghman Street, from Route 309 to the Wegman's area. The flags will stay in place through Monday night, possibly Tuesday morning.

"The level of enthusiasm...was tremendous," sad Lyle, adding that "Flags on Tilghman" may become an annual fund-raising event for Pack 12.

Cub scouts approached the businesses in that section of Tilghman Street, with 30 to 35 businesses contributing $25 and more to the fund-raising effort. The total amount has not yet been tallied.

Lyle said the cub scouts used the money to buy the flags that they placed along the roadway, and they will use proceeds to fund summer activities and dues. 

Cub Scout Master Steve Chappelear also spoke to the youngsters about Memorial Day and why the country honors its veterans. 

"It was really a positive experience," Lyle said.
