Meredith-Ann Beam Earns Girl Scouts' Gold Award

Meredith-Ann Beam, whose troop meets at Jordan Luther Church in South Whitehall, made blankets and bears for hospitals as her Girl Scout project.

Meredith-Ann Beam, 18, has been awarded the highest Girl Scout honor -- the Gold Award. 

Beam, of Schnecksville, is a member of Girl Scout Troop 63402, which meets at , South Whitehall. 

The Lehigh County Commissioners recently honored Beam, along with three other Gold Award recipients —, Avani Dalal and Colleen Vandergrift. Chairman Brad Osborne presented them with their Gold Award certificates.

Beam's project included crocheting five baby blankets, knitting another five baby blankets, making 40 regular-sized blankets and making 70 bears for children at various local organizations.

“I taught the younger scouts how to knit and crochet the baby blankets and teddy bears for children to cuddle with," she said. "They were given to Bayada Pediatrics, Catholic Charities, Turning Point, Sacred Heart Hospital and Lehigh Valley Hospital.”

Beam has completed her freshman year at Liberty University.  She is studying to become an elementary school teacher.

The daughter of Kim Beam and the late David Beam, she trains Seeing Eye Dogs for the Seeing Eye Corporation. The training is done through the South Paws 4-H Club. 

Only 5 percent of eligible Girl Scouts receive the prestigious Gold Award for outstanding achievement and public service. 

An eight-pointed star with rays radiating from a central trefoil was pinned to Beam’s uniform at the county commissioner ceremony.

Prior to earning the Gold Award, Beam received the Bronze Award in 2008 and the Silver Award in 2010.  She also received the God and Me Award in 2006.
