Greenawalds Fire Co. Open House and Hack-o-Lantern Contest

Here's a look at what's happening this weekend in and around South Whitehall Township.


  • The race for the Lehigh Valley Conference football title and a District 11 playoff berth is getting hot. The Parkland High school varsity football team is right in the middle of the fray. The Trojans will travel to Bethlehem Area School District Stadium Friday night to take on Freedom. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
  • Greenawalds Fire Company will host an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the station, 2500 Focht Ave.(Note: The hours were changed because of a scheduling conflict.)
  • Autumn Glory Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Jordan UCC Church, 1837 Church Road (corner of Route 309 and Walbert Avenue), South Whitehall.
  • Celebrate German culture at ArtsQuest Oktoberfest, which continues Friday through Sunday at PCN Plaza and SteelStacks in Bethlehem. Tickets cost $25 for an all-festival pass; $10 daily; $3 for children ages 6-12 and free for children under 6. Parking available on site. www.artsquest.org
  • Hack-o-Lantern Contest on Saturday and Sunday at the Da Vinci Science Center, 3145 Hamilton Blvd. Bypass, Allentown. Stations will be available for designing, scooping out pumpkins, and “hacking” them creatively with a variety of items, including power tools. Electronics also will be available for purchase in the Curiosity Shop for tricking out their Hack-O-Lanterns. Visitors can leave their creations at the Center or take them home for more hacking. Hack-O-Lanterns left at the Center or returned by 12 p.m. Monday will be eligible for judging.
  •  Check out the fall foliage this weekend. Use this quick guide to find fall foliage peak times for your autumn weekend getaway.

  • writing workshop will be held at the Parkland Community Library at 1 p.m. Saturday. Join former English teacher Jane Killian for a poetry writing workshop. Poems will be read and written. Registration is required by calling 610-398-1361, ext. 19.

  • Dorney's Park's Boo Blast offers daytime Halloween fun for kids this weekend. Boo Blast is free with park admission and open noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. (Planet Snoopy is open until 8 p.m. on Saturday). New this year is the Mansion House Hotel where kids can wander haunted hallways in search of friendly ghosts.
