Parkland Skier Takes Gold in Statewide Special Olympics
Parkland student Marissa Malaska won three gold medals in downhill skiing in Pennsylvania's 2012 Special Olympics winter games.
Even her coach considered it a challenge for someone to win three gold medals in downhill skiing in Pennsylvania’s 2012 Special Olympics Winter Games. But for 21-year-old Parkland student Marissa Malaska, it was a breeze. “I didn’t know I would win, but I was very happy to win,” Malaska said recently. She beat both men and women to take the top prize in all three categories for her age and expertise: slalom, giant slalom and downhill. “It’s very unusual,” her coach, Linda Schuler of Bath, said of Malaska’s sweep last month at the Hidden Valley ski area in Johnstown. “She’s up against all the best special alpine skiers in the state, the best of the best.” Schuler said she knew her student would do well because she’s an expert skier and …
