Night out
The South Whitehall Police Department has begun its planning for this year's National Night Out observance, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Covered Bridge Park. The township police held its first National Night Out community event last year at the park in conjunction with its crime watch groups. Given its success, plans call for a bigger event this summer. South Whitehall police officers, crime watch members and local sponsors will offer a family style event with food, exhibits by local law enforcement agencies and departments and children’s activities. All residents are welcome to attend the event, which is free. National Night Out, a nationwide event held every year on the first Tuesday of August, is …

Members meet monthly with South Whitehall police who keep them up-to-date on crime statistics and safety measures.
When Heather Dubov moved to South Whitehall from New York City some time ago, she found that residents here were able to have a closer relationship with police. “Calling the New York police because a car without lights passed your house slowly three times, or you saw glass shattered next to your neighbor's car would have been met with laughter,” Dubov said, noting the difficulty of reporting "possible" crime in a city as large as New York. Here, Dubov is among group of township residents who are the extra "eyes and ears" of the South Whitehall Police Department, watching crime trends and keeping on the alert. She is involved with one of two crime watch groups in the township, Residents Around Dorney Are Reporting (R.A.D.A.R.), for those …

Police, emergency personnel, crime watch groups and local businesses pulled together to make the event at Covered Bridge Park a success.
If you ask 20-year crime watch veteran Eleanor Meli, South Whitehall Township’s first National Night Out community celebration at Covered Bridge Park should get a big “thumbs up.” “I’m having a lot of fun,” Meli said Tuesday night as she finished a piece of red, white and blue cake. “The food is great, but I’m only eating the goodies. They’re delicious.” The township’s two crime watch groups, Residents Around Dorney Are Reporting (R.A.D.A.R.) and Neighbors Are Reporting Crime (N.A.R.C.) usually hold annual summer picnics but combined with the township this year for the National Night Out event. “We’re bringing the community together to meet the police and to meet each other so they can recognize when there are strangers in the area,” said …

South Whitehall will host its first National Night Out on Tuesday in an effort to build community spirit and strengthen partnerships between police and the community. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Covered Bridge Park, 2465 Wehr Mill Road. "It's part of our community policing program, an outreach attempt to work with the community," said Lt. John Christman. "It should be a fun night." The event will be combined with the annual summer picnic of the two crime watch groups in the township, Neighbors Are Reporting Crime (N.A.R.C.) and Residents Around Dorney are Reporting (R.A.D.A.R.), Christman said. Sponsors are many and include Target, a national sponsor of the event; and BounceU, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Cetronia …
