Winter Storm Nemo: How Much Snow Will We Get?

South and North Whitehall are bracing for Winter Storm Nemo, which could bring six to 10 inches of snow today into Saturday morning

A major winter storm will hit the Northeast and New England today into Saturday and South and North Whitehall could get up to 7 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. The worst of the storm will hit tonight with heavy blowing snow expected. The National Weather Service says: "As much as one to two feet of snow is forecast from the New York City metro area to Maine, with localized heavier amounts possible. This, in addition to wind gusts as high as 60-75 mph will create significant impacts to transportation and power. Coastal flooding is also possible from Boston northward." WFMZ is also forecasting  a "moderate event" with six or more inches of snow for the Lehigh Valley. Driving conditions will worsen tonight as …

It's Been Great Getting to Know You, South and North Whitehall

Friday will be my last day at Patch.

To the South and North Whitehall communities, For the past six months I've experienced life in both Whitehalls in a way most people don't. I've attended, analyzed and wrote about municipal and school board meetings, went to the police station at least twice a week, visited the District Judge's office weekly and introduced myself and Patch to countless business people. It's been a wonderful experience and I've learned much about what South and North Whitehall residents are really like. First - when Hurricane Sandy blew through town, I learned how generous neighbors can be and how dedicated emergency workers are. Then, I watched how folks handled a divisive national election and still managed to remain civil. Along the way I met teachers and…

ATM Card Stolen, Hidden in Man's Shoe, Cops Say

A 32-year-old accused of stealing friend's card. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

A Coplay man has been accused of stealing his friend's ATM card and trying to withdraw $100 at three different locations before hiding the card in his shoe, according to court records. Ryan Joseph Gaston, 32, of 1113 Poplar St., was charged with unlawful taking as he used the card with no intent to restore it to the owner, knowing such property was stolen or believing it had probably been stolen. On Jan. 28 at 11:19 a.m., South Whitehall police received a call from a woman who said her friend, Gaston, took her debit card and ATM card and used them without her permission. This incident occurred at the Quality Inn, 1715 Plaza Lane. Gaston was taken into custody and his identity confirmed by his Pennsylvania driver’s license. The owner of the…

Fire Near Scene of 2 Horror Movies May Be Arson

An old barn burned Monday on a Lehigh County property where 2 horror movies were filmed.

North Whitehall Fire Marshal Don Jacobs said a Monday morning fire in an abandoned barn at 4767 Cobbler Road is considered "suspicious." The adjoining slaughterhouse, which was the setting for two indie horror movies, was not damaged. "There's no natural cause that would set my mind at ease," Jacobs said. "There was nothing stored in there that could self-ignite, no farming equipment or anything - just some old hay." Jacobs said the barn hasn't had power or been used in any way since 1980. "We did bring in the Allentown arson dog and the Pa. State Police fire marshal from Dublin," Jacobs said. "We're taking this very seriously because one thing can lead to another and we don’t want anything to get worse." He confirmed they have some active…

Tax Collector Salary Increases, Health Benefits Cut

Parkland School Board Directors approved an average $7,000 raise for Upper Macungie, South Whitehall and North Whitehall tax collectors.

Parkland School Board Directors approved a "fairly substantial" salary increase for the three area tax collectors Tuesday night. Director of Business Administration John Vignone said the significant increase was due to health benefits being cut from the compensation package. He estimated the salary for North Whitehall, South Whitehall and Upper Macungie tax collectors was increased by about $7,000 each. Every four years, directors set the salary of elected tax collectors. Directors said Tuesday the decision to reduce benefits and increase the salary was made after "thoroughly vetting" the information during workshops. The salaries will be in effect January 2014 - December 2017.  Compensation was described on the District website as:
