Wall of Honor to Add Seven Parkland Alums

Former NFL player Greg DeLong and retired Coast Guard Admiral David W. Kunkel will be among the seven Parkland School District alumni to be feted May 6 in Fogelsville.

A former NFL player, a retired Coast Guard admiral and business leaders are among the seven alumni to be inducted this year into the Parkland School District Education Foundation's Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor. The Wall of Honor was established last year and is inside the main entrance of Parkland High School.  Those chosen to be inducted serve as an inspiration to students to achieve excellence and remind the community of Parkland’s commitment to a quality educational program, foundation officials said. Thursday Night: Dinner and a Show Starring Ghostbusters Actor Ernie Hudson

The one man play, "Ghost in the House," is proceeded by a dining event at Outback Steakhouse

Stage and film actor, Ernie Hudson, will star in a one-man play, "Ghost in the House" at Cedar Crest College and Parkland High School starting tonight. The play will give audiences a chance to witness the life and struggles of Jack Johnson, the first African American Heavyweight Champion of the World.   The first show is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Parkland High School Auditorium and a second show is scheduled on Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. at the Tompkins College Center at Cedar Crest College. The Feb. 7 show will benefit the Parkland School District Education Foundation and will be preceded by a dining event at Outback Steakhouse  - which will donate a percent of dinner sales to the Foundation. Parkland Students Prove Smarter Than Teachers

A group of five Parkland High School students emerged victorious in the first annual 'Are You Smarter Than A Teacher?' competition.

An academic "Super Bowl" of sorts was on tap Tuesday afternoon at the Parkland High School library with 230 students and faculty vying for top honors in the inaugural "Are You Smarter Than A Teacher?" competition. In the end, five Parkland students -- Molly Diamondstein, Elena Mandry, Kirby Peroza, Katrina Buckland and Ross Bloszinsky -- bested five faculty members in the final round to walk away with the championship. "We all went to a meeting, and we're all really good friends, so we decided to do it together," Diamondstein said. "It's shocking that we beat our teachers." "It was really fun," Mandry said. "Ghost in the House" is about an African American boxing champion in early 1900s who was also inspiration for Muhammad Ali.

Are You Smarter Than A Teacher?

Parkland honor societies are co-hosting a contest that will pit students against teachers.

  Are You Smarter than a Teacher? Some Parkland students are about to find out. The Spanish Honor Society and National Honor Society at Parkland High School will co-host the 'Are You Smarter than a Teacher?' contest at 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 29. Proceeds will benefit the Parkland Education Foundation. Students will form teams of five students each to compete against teacher teams of the same size. There will be a teacher or student reader of questions at each station in the categories of: math, science, sports, pop culture, history, and the arts.  Each team must answer 10 questions correctly and a bonus question to move on in the tournament. Brackets of teams will compete until the final two face off in an academic super bowl.  Each player will…

Parkland Seeks Nominees for Alumni Wall of Honor

Parkland's Wall of Honor aims to recognize notable alumni in arts, sports, business and other areas.

  The Parkland School District Education Foundation is seeking nominations for the high school's Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor. The program, launched in the last school year, is designed to recognize notable Parkland alumni, not only in tribute to them but also in hopes the recognition will inspire students and the community. In May, Parkland's Education Foundation kicked off the program when it inducted eight accomplished Parkland High School alum into the Wall of Honor, including an actress, opera singer, former NFL tight end, business and education leaders. Michaela Conlin Among 8 Parkland Alums to be Honored

The Parkland School District Education Foundation will hold its first Gala on May 14, when actress Michaela Conlin and seven other accomplished alum will be inducted into a Wall of Honor.

Actress Michaela Conlin is among eight accomplished Parkland High School alum who will be inducted into the district's new Wall of Honor this month, when Parkland's Education Foundation holds it first Gala. The event, on May 14 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Fogelsville, is sold out, school officials said. Conlin is a 1996 graduate. She plays Angela Montenegro on the Fox TV series "Bones." In addition to Conlin, those will be inducted into the Wall of Honor include: * William D. George II, a 1952 graduate. Parkland's Holiday Campaign Under Way

Donations in teachers' names can be made online or by mail.

Anyone wanting to make holiday donations to the Parkland School District’s new Education Foundation in honor of a teacher, bus driver or other staff member can do so online or by mail. Officials are offering up the holiday gift option as a way to honor teachers or staff while supporting the foundation's "Celebrate Innovation" grant program that will be rolled out in January. Under the new program, staff will be able to apply for a grant to implement their creative ideas for enhancing classroom instruction or improving the community in some way.  Patch first told you about the holiday program in October. The holiday tribute will include a card designed by Parkland graduate Alyssa Long that can be personalized with holiday sentiments. …
