Parkland High School's Festival of the Arts gets under way Thursday, May 17, and continues through Saturday, May 19, with music, arts and food.

Patch was on hand as Parkland High School students and teachers gave a preview of its annual Festival of the Arts, which gets under way Thursday, May 17, and continues through Saturday, May 19. The festival, on the grounds of the high school, will offer the public a mix of arts and entertainment, including a '50s inspired dinner theater, a Disney character parade, food tastings ("Eat This, Not That"), a Battle of the Bands, an American Girl Doll fashion exhibit, art show and chorus concert. Festivities are scheduled over three days.

Parkland Honors Opera Singer, 'Bones' Star, Other Alum

Opera singer Patricia Risley, "Bones" television star Michaela Conlin and former NFL tight end Tim Massaquoi among eight distinguished Parkland alumni inducted into Wall of Honor at 2012 Gala.

A sold-out crowd turned out Monday night for the Parkland's Education Foundation's first Gala, which saw eight accomplished Parkland High School alum inducted into a Wall of Honor, including an actress, opera singer, former NFL tight end, business and education leaders. The event was held at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Fogelsville. Patch was there for the festivities. Inducted in the Wall of Honor:

Parkland Snags 12 Freddy Award Nominations

"Hello Dolly" is nominated for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical, but also snags awards in 11 other categories, including scenery, costumes, lighting and individual performances.

Parkland High School's production of "Hello Dolly" is nominated for 12 Freddy Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical. The nominations came in scenery, lighting, costumes and individual performances. Payton Sherry is nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, and William Marshall is nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. The nominations were announced live on Wednesday on WFMZ, Channel 69. Parkland To Host Three-Day Festival of the Arts

Parkland's ninth annual community event will feature a Disney character parade, American Girl Fashions, art and entertainment.

Parkland's Festival of the Arts returns May 17-19 to the grounds of the high school, offering the public a mix of arts and entertainment, including old favorites, such as a '50s inspired dinner theater, and new events, such as a Disney character parade. The ninth annual festival will also feature food tastings, a Battle of the Bands, an American Girl Doll fashion exhibit, art show and chorus concert. Bone Marrow Drive Planned for Ex-Parkland Teacher

Retired Parkland English teacher John Ritter has a rare blood cancer; a bone marrow transplant is his only hope.

There are some teachers who make kids look forward to school and when Kerin Steigerwalt was a Parkland High sophomore, John Ritter was that person for her. “He is probably one of the most influential people in my life, hands down,” Steigerwalt said Tuesday of her former English teacher. “He was a teacher who would push you to think beyond what you thought you could do.  He really showed us how to go from adolescent writing that you’d expect from a teenager to much more sophisticated, provocative pieces. He instilled in many of us a love of classic literature that is with us today.” Now Ritter is fighting an extremely rare blood cancer and Steigerwalt is hoping his popularity will contribute to an outpouring of potential donors when …
