Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls will be higher in 2013 as the result of an increase approved by the turnpike commission: The last time tolls went up was January 2011. The commission says the change will hike toll revenue 3 percent to fulfill a $450 million funding obligation to the state. More changes are in the works as turnpike officials consider the possibility of eliminating toll plazas and cash payments.

State lawmakers might raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. Do you support the move?
State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the Turnpike Commission to raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. The House Transportation Committee recently approved the measure, which would affect sections of both the Northeast Extension and the rest of the turnpike. Supporters of the measure say the change makes sense because vehicles are safer and the turnpike is wider, flatter and straighter thanks to road improvements. There is no timetable for when - or if - the bill will come to a vote. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are "strongly urging motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel in eastern Pennsylvania, including the area from Harrisburg north to the New York border, east to the New Jersey border and south to the Maryland border" in an alert issued at midday. The National Weather Service says there's still a chance of heavy rain in Lehigh and Northampton counties this afternoon. As of 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Interstate 80 was closed in both directions from Exits 232 to 236 and Interstate 81 was closed in both directions between Exits 90 and 100.
