The South Whitehall Township Police Department will hire a new patrol officer this year, according to Chief Thomas Toth. The deadline to submit an application is Friday. The department, which currently has 37 members, added four new patrol officers last May to replace four who retired. Starting salary for a new officer at the time was $53,026. The new patrol officer would be an addition to the force, which would allow a current member of the force to become a school resource officer in the Parkland middle schools, Toth said. The school resource officer's salary would be paid by the school district and the township, he said. A computer and other items valued about $1,730 were stolen, police said. PaintSome Pottery is a pottery studio where customers can handpaint unfinished pieces of pottery. Two Allentown men are in custody following a police chase that began Friday in Lower Macungie after one man stole baby formula from the Walmart in the township then lied that his vehicle had been carjacked, state police at Fogelsville said. The chase ended in Allentown, with police taking the second man who fled in the vehicle into custody at Seventh and Union streets, police said. The sixth National Take Back Day drug collection will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 17 locations across Lehigh County including: Allentown locations are: You can dispose of capsules, pills, including pet medications, and liquids. Syringes or Sharps will not be accepted. Residents who dispose of medications will remain anonymous, as has been the case in the last five collections, and no questions will be asked. The amount of unwanted and expired drugs collected during the past Take Back Day events has been staggering. During the last five collection events in 2010, 2011 and 2012, a total of 3,269 pounds of drugs were collected in Lehigh County alone. South Whitehall Police are investigating the use of counterfeit money used at two area businesses. A bogus $20 bill was used Tuesday at Potts' Hot Dogs, 3512 Hamilton Blvd., and a counterfeit $50 bill was used Saturday at G&K Pharmacy, 4680 Broadway, police said.
