West Nile Virus Found in Upper Macungie Bird

A bird found in Upper Macungie Township has tested positive for West Nile Virus

A bird as well as mosquito samples from Upper Macungie Township have tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to state officials. If you find a dead bird, report it as part of the state's West Nile control program. Mosquitos in neighboring South Whitehall and Weisenberg Townships have also tested positive for the virus. This year, Pennsylvania reported the earliest detection of a West Nile virus-carrying mosquito since testing began in 2000. The infected mosquito was found May 3 in Berks County. Typically, the state’s first West Nile virus-carrying mosquito is found in mid-June.  Lehigh County was designated a hot zone for West Nile virus last September. West Nile Efforts Focus on Breeding Grounds

West Nile coordinator says Lehigh County prevention work centers on cleaning up mosquito breeding grounds, not spraying.

Lehigh County efforts to reduce the risk of people contracting West Nile Virus center on eliminating certain mosquito breeding grounds, rather than spraying to eradicate the insects, the county coordinator said. Last week, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced that a mosquito found in Upper Macungie tested positive for West Nile Virus. The state has issued similar reports about mosquitoes found in South Whitehall and Upper Saucon.  Louise Bugbee, West Nile coordinator for Lehigh County, said the county is concentrating on trapping and testing certain mosquitoes and trying to make it more difficult for them to breed. The county has no spraying scheduled. "We have certain thresholds that we have to meet before we spray…
