South, North Whitehall Pick Haafsville Sanctuary over Humane Society

Both South and North Whitehall townships recently opted for an animal control contract with The Sanctuary at Haafsville but North Whitehall gets a sweeter deal.

Citing significant cost savings, both South Whitehall and North Whitehall chose to award their animal control contracts to The Sanctuary at Haafsville instead of the Lehigh County Humane Society, but North Whitehall appears to have the better deal. In South Whitehall, the Humane Society bid $10,200 for a 2013 annual contract and The Sanctuary bid $6,000. In North Whitehall, The Sanctuary is charging $50 to collect cats and $100 for dogs.  North Whitehall supervisors didn't even consider a bid from the Humane Society this year. Three years ago, North Whitehall opted for The Sanctuary, based in Upper Macungie, when the Humane Society upped its annual bid to $7,400.  Last year, South Whitehall had a contract with The Sanctuary that was …

Visions for Vacancies

What Went Here? Yorgey Supply

This week's column got a little confusing because the vacant property in question is actually scheduled to be demolished - the question is when?

Patch snapped a picture of the former Yorgey Supply Kitchen & Bath Design Center store at the corner of Orchard Road and Route 309, thinking it was a vacancy that retailers and readers would love to see filled because of its visibility on a highly traveled route. Unfortunately, there's no chance that will happen. According to Greg Kotch, partner and vice president at Yorgey Supply, his company was forced to sell the building to the state, under eminent domain, so PennDOT can widen the intersection. Apparently PennDOT has had plans to widen the western side of the intersection since the late '90s. On the eastern side of Route 309 the name of the road is different - it's Sand Spring Road. Kotch said over the years the money that was …

Dishing It Up

Tex's Smokin' Bar-B-Q "is the Real Deal"

Weekends-only trailer serves truckload of slow-cooked, smoky flavor to take-out customers and picnickers.

In honor of the recent launch of North Whitehall Patch and its new editor, Jennifer Rodgers, I have made this my first review of a "restaurant" in the township whose nearly 29 square miles include the villages of Mechanicsville, Orefield and Schnecksville. I put the term restaurant in quotes because, well, Tex's Smokin' BarBQ is actually a trailer set up along a busy stretch of Route 309 near Shankweiler's Drive-In on property owned by the Hunsicker Funeral Home. My former editor suggested the place out of curiosity concerning the smoke she would see wafting across the highway from a small wood-burning smoker and from the massive rotisserie, nicknamed "Betsy," parked behind the trailer. Turns out Betsy is where owner Tex Wells, who wears…

Citizens Group Will Appeal a North Whitehall Sewage Plant Vote

The Voice of Jordan, a group of community activists, will appeal a township decision that could lead to a new sewage treatment plant.

A group of citizens who oppose the location of a proposed sewage treatment plant in North Whitehall Township will go to court to appeal a waiver that township supervisors granted to Lehigh County Authority Tuesday night. The conditional-use waiver was the first hurdle the LCA had to clear before its proposed treatment plant, capable of handling 200,000 gallons day, can be built. Attorney John Roberts, who represents the citizens group - The Voice of the Jordan- said Thursday that his clients will definitely appeal the decision in Lehigh County Court of Common Pleas. “Legally the LCA can go ahead with a land development plan while we are appealing but they risk losing money if the court of common pleas reverses it,” said Roberts. LCA asked …
