Daniel Wang: Cool as a Cucumber

A Trophy's good; a scholarship's better

  • Name: Daniel Wang, 13
  • School: Springhouse Middle School, 8th grade
  • Greatest Accomplishment: Taking second-place honors during the 27th Annual Lehigh Valley MATHCOUNTS regional competition last month. Coached by Kevin Hallman, his team was the top-ranked team of 33 schools from four counties that participated in the contest. For achieving that honor, the team will advance to the state competition March 18-19 at the Sheraton Hershey Hotel.
  • Key to Awesomeness: His laid-back personality. Daniel’s cool demeanor is evident by the fact that he knows his capabilities and doesn’t feel the need to approach others with an “in-your-face” attitude. Daniel received a trophy for placing second in the MATHCOUNTS competition, but that doesn’t seem to impress him. What does make him sit up and pay attention is the accompanying scholarship that he can use to take college-level courses when he attends Parkland High School. At this time, his plans are to take advantage of the scholarship with classes at Muhlenberg, and even though he’s not exactly sure what his future plans include, he says his career will be in science, probably in the area of medical research. Aside from his interest in science and math, Daniel plays the piano and the violin, and he’s learning to speak Chinese at the Hua Xia Chinese School at Northampton Community College. For fun, he enjoys reading,  video games and playing with his friends, and he plans to try out for Parkland’s tennis team when he gets to high school.
