Get Out: 5 Things To Do This Weekend

Patch offers up ideas to help you make the most of your week.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend. Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-with-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the information on a variety of events for this upcoming weekend (and then some).

1. Haines Mill Band Concert

When/Where: 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at

Why Go: Because it's the Allentown Band, and it's the perfect way to wind down the weekend. Tours of historic Haines Grist Mill will be available from 1-6 p.m.

Pricing: Free, but please bring your own lawn chair for the concert.

2. The Ben Event

When/Where: 5:30 p.m. July 15 continuing through 4 p.m. July 16 at Macungie Memorial Park.

Why Go: The fundraising event honors the life of Ben Yorgey, son of Kent and Ardyth Yorgey of Macungie. Ben, an Emmaus High School grad, was 24 when he died from an anoxic brain injury caused by a seizure suffered on May 5, 2009. Events for the whole family include a 5K run, walk and kids' run, motorcycle ride and Special Olympics swim meet on Saturday. After the Special Olympics softball game and award ceremony on Friday, the evening will be turned over to "The Large Flowerheads" at 8 p.m. The group will provide music from the 60s and 70s for all to enjoy.

Pricing: Donations for the concert.

 

3. Happy Birthday Crayola

Where/When: At  in Easton on Saturday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Why Go: It’s a day long celebration at Crayola for their 15th birthday. Festivities inside and out include stilt walking, hoop dancing, juggling, globe-walking, magic shows, entertainment by the New York Group Hot Peas 'N Butter (5 p.m.), The JoEs, The School of Rock and the O'Grady Irish Dancers, storytelling by Robbi K., more.

Price: The outdoor entertainment is free but tickets are required for the duck pond, moon bounce, dunk tank and climbing wall. All day passes for the outside games are available for $25. Admission to The Crayola Experience™ is $9.75 per person; children 2 and under are free. A birthday combo pass is available for $30 and includes all activities. 4. Grist Mill Open House

Where/When: At the Helfrich Springs Grist Mill, Mickley and Lehnert Roads, Whitehall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16.

Why Go: The Helfrich Springs Grist Mill is more than 200 years old and is the last remaining grist mill out of five that once existed in Whitehall Township. Built by Peter Grim in 1807, the mill stands along the Jordan Creek on a portion of a 300-acre tract of land originally patented by Jacob Wertz in 1749. Come check out their open house and tour the mill and land.

Price: Free.

Where/When: At Catasauqua Park, 500 St. John St., on Saturday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Why Go: It’s an all day outdoor rock festival featuring The Transmission, NOW, Ovlo, Bad American, Beyond Eden, Nostalgia Crisis, Kaeyo, Settle, The Long Morrow, Set Yourself on Fire, Sunsets North and Apocryfiend.

Price: Free.

6. Read to the Pups

Where/When: on Monday, July 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Why Go: Furry friends offer an ear to youngsters practicing their oral reading skills.
