Residents Ask for Street Light on N. 26th Street

South Whitehall commissioners agree to contact PPL Corp. about the possibility of installing one to two street lights in the 1200 block of N. 26th Street.

A year after Parkview Avenue residents for four street lights in their neighborhood, residents of the 1200 block of N. 26th Street have petitioned South Whitehall for a street light there to help deter crime.

South Whitehall commissioners readily agreed at their meeting Wednesday night, giving approval for the township to contact PPL Corp. about installing one light mid-block and possibly another at Fairmont Street.

"There's no lighting on this street at all," Community Development Manager Jerry Harbison told the board prior to the verbal vote. "It appears to be a reasonable request."

The petition was signed by eight residents on N. 26th Street, who cited the safety concerns and suggested a light be added to an existing pole. Harbison said all but one resident on the block had signed the petition.

Harbison recommended a second light at N. 26th and Fairmont streets.

When the lights were approved for Parkview Avenue, the township was to pay $2,000 toward installation and about $20 a month per light in electricity costs.
