Hotel Proposed for King George Inn Property

Plans to convert the historic King George Inn into a hotel, drug store and bank will be presented Wednesday to the South Whitehall Township Zoning Hearing Board.

The historic King George Inn could become the site of a hotel, drug store and bank if recently submitted plans for the project get approved in South Whitehall Township.

Built in 1756, the King George Inn at Cedar Crest and Hamilton boulevards was designated a National Historic site. Owner Clifford G. McDermott, closed his restaurant last August after 42 years.

On Wednesday, McDermott, of G.J.C. Inc. and CNN CNN, Inc., and Hotel Hamilton LLC. will ask the Zoning Hearing Board for variances to the township's ordinances on maximum building height, righty-of-way widths, and parking lot setbacks.

The plans call for a 25,890 square-foot hotel called the Hotel Hamilton, a 14,800 square-foot drug store and a 4,020 bank. The area is zoned highway commercial.

Hotel Hamilton, LLC. bought the Burger King and Carvel sites for close to $1.9 million in 2012. The King George Inn, which is owned by McDermott, has been on the market for nearly $1.4 million.

The properties are along a busy section of Hamilton Boulevard lined with restaurants, shopping centers, hotels and other businesses, such as Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom.

According to state business filings, Hotel Hamilton's address is that of Atul Patel. Patel is chief executive officer of HMB Management Inc., a development company in Upper Macungie that specializes in the management of hotels and commercial real estate investments, including the Holiday Inn Express at 3620 Hamilton Blvd., South Whitehall.
