Good Samaritan Richard Helms, 60, was killed Dec. 26 when he got out of his car on Interstate 78 and tried to help someone with a disabled vehicle.
Helms, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was struck by an SUV that was spinning out of control. He was pronounced dead later in the day at Lehigh Valley Hospital.
In the meantime, his dog, Rancid, was still in the car. Tow-truck driver Richard Krieble was called to scene of the accident when he heard police radio that there was a dog in the car that would have to be transported to the Humane Society.
According to reports from WFMZ, Krieble hated the idea of the dog being locked in a crate so he took Rancid to his own home and contacted Helms' family. Helms' brother is scheduled to pick up Rancid this afternoon and take him home.
“Unfortunately they lost a loved one. They're not going to lose this one,” Krieble told WFMZ.
