Man Admits DUI in Parkland School Bus Crash

Scott Michael Haas, whose car collided with a Parkland school bus, pleads guilty Monday to a DUI. Police had said he had the prescription drug methadone in his system.

 

A 27-year-old Orefield man pleaded guilty Monday to driving under the influence in a March 1 crash that saw  on Cedar Crest Boulevard near , according to online court records.

Scott Michael Haas, of 5211 Blue Sky Drive, was immediately sentenced to 135 days of house arrest by Lehigh County Judge James T. Anthony, according to a report on lehighvalleylive.com. Haas will also serve 55 months and 15 days of probation and a $1,500 fine, the report says.

The charge was for a second offense.

At the time of the crash, police had said, Haas had the prescription drugs methadone and lorazepam (also known as Ativan) in his system. 

Haas had been northbound on Cedar Crest Boulevard. 

The Parkland school bus, traveling south on Cedar Crest Boulevard, had been carrying four students to Lehigh Valley Christian Academy in Salisbury Township. It toppled to its side. Haas, the bus driver and the students had been taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. .

According to the lehighvalleylive.com report, Haas' lawyer said his client had been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, struggles with substance abuse and had been prescribed the methadone and lorazepam by doctors.

I contacted LVHN several months ago about volunteering with my son (8 years old) at the AndersonRead More campus. I would stay with him at all times and supervise him. I was told that they do not accept children. I think its a shame that the hospital will not accept him a a volunteer. I am trying to teach him how to give back to his community . Apparently the hospital does not want our help. I think several patients, especially older ones, would like getting assistance from a young child.

Tom, LVHN does not have an Anderson Campus. I believe you are referring to St Luke's Health Network.Read More LVHN is not able to accept volunteers under the age of 16 years old. There are many mandated reasons that young children are not allowed to volunteer in a hospital setting. Volunteering is a wonderful thing to teach your children. There are organizations in the Leigh Valley who are willing to utilize families. Please visit the Volunteer Center of the Leigh Valley for other opportunities in your area. www.volunteerlv.org
