Cedar Crest Boulevard Speed Limit to Remain 40 Mph

A PennDOT speed limit study of Cedar Crest Boulevard was prompted by some residents' complaints.

A Pennsylvania Department of Transportation traffic study recently concluded the speed limit on a stretch of N. Cedar Crest Boulevard in South Whitehall Township should remain 40 mph.

The speed limit on N. Cedar Crest Boulevard, which runs through a residential neighborhood, has been 40 mph since 1968.

The South Whitehall Board of Commissioners authorized PennDOT to conduct the study after several residents who live along the road complained the speed limit is too high on N. Cedar Crest Boulevard between Tilghman Street and Route 22.

Some homeowners said it is a challenge to safely mow their lawns and rake leaves because their properties are not buffered by sidewalks or curbs but directly border the shoulder of N. Cedar Crest Boulevard.

South Whitehall Township Police Chief Thomas Toth presented the findings to the commissioners last month.

The police department, which had been been periodically monitoring the speed of passing motorists since last summer, found the overwhelming majority of motorists traveled within the legal speed limit.
