School District Will Vote on Budget This Month

A 1.46-mill increase is expected less gaming credit monies.

Parkland school directors are poised to vote later this month on the  for 2011-2012, which is seen raising taxes by 1.46 mills less a credit from monies garnered from casino gaming in the state.

A meeting of the district's personnel and finance committee Monday morning confirmed the board's intention to vote on the budget, according to John Vignone, director of business administration.

A household with an average assessed value of $100,000 will pay an additional $146 in school taxes, he said, less about $105 from real estate reductions from funds raised by casino gaming.

In other matters, the committee said five full-time teaching assistants and two part-time teaching assistants will be furloughed due to declining special education enrollment.

Superintendent Dr. Louise Donohue said that cutback in staff is due to a drop in student enrollment and not budget-related.

Earlier this year, the district said up to  may be eliminated due to budgetary concerns, but some of those positions may be cut through attrition.

The board will discuss that matter at its June 21 meeting.
