Parkland Football, Free Concert, Toby Keith Top Weekend Events

It's Labor Day weekend, the last (unofficial) weekend of the summer. Enjoy time with family and friends before the kids go back to school Tuesday. 

The National Weather Service forecast is calling for a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend, so be sure to keep your eyes to the skies. 

Here's what's going on in and around South Whitehall this weekend:

• Lucky 7, a popular R&B dance band in the Lehigh Valley, will perform free from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Covered Bridge Park in South Whitehall. The concert is hosted by the township. Bring a lawn chair and a blanket, and you can enjoy a night under the stars. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. (Rain date is Aug. 31).
  

• Are you ready for some football? Parkland High School Trojans will begin defense of their District 11 football championship Friday night when they host Delaware Valley. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Orefield Middle School. Arrive early for a good parking spot and a good seat.

• Great Allentown Fair headliner Toby Keith will sign autographs for patrons who buy a $37 bottle of liquor Saturday at the Wine & Spirits Store in South Whitehall.

• The Great Allentown Fair continues its run through Labor Day at the Allentown Fairgrounds. For specific information on the fair, including hours, headliner acts and admission prices, click here. 

• Enjoy fireworks with Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday. It's the final fireworks show of the summer season. There are several good vantage points in the township for viewing, including across the street at Ice Cream World.

• Flyin' Blind band is playing at Grumpy's Bar-B-Que Roadhouse beginning at 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to the restaurant's Facebook page. Rick "Mad Dog" Moyer and the 5:00 Band will play beginning at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

• Check out the Grossology exhibit at the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown, which is in its final two weeks. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

• The nearby Lehigh Valley Zoo in Schnecksville is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Friday through Monday. You can check out the alligator feeding at noon Saturday.

• The Valley Preferred Cycling Center, at 1151 Mosser Road in Breinigsville, is chock full of holiday weekend events. On Friday, it's the World Series of Bicycling's UCI Madison Cup races, beginning at 7 p.m. It's also Fan Appreciation Night, featuring giveaways and drink specials.

• The nearby Allentown Art Museum is free to all on Sunday. Hours are noon to 4 p.m.
